Associate Professor & MsC Academic Program Director @ The Asian Institute of Management

Dr. Erika Fille T. Legara is an associate professor at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and recently received the Aboitiz Chair in Data Science. Erika is also the Academic Program Director of the Institute’s Master of Science in Data Science, the first data science graduate program in the Philippines, and the Deputy Managing Director of the advanced analytics arm of AIM – the Analytics, Computing, and Complex Systems lab (ACCeSs). Erika specializes in data-driven analytics and modeling, computational social science, network science, and agent-based modelling. Her current research is geared towards understanding complex systems through the data science lens and determining the mechanisms that drive and control them — from cities and societies, to financial and economic systems, to business institutions. At present, she is involved in a few multi-national-funded projects and some government projects. Erika obtained her PhD in Physics from the University of the Philippines-Diliman, garnering the Most Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the Edgardo Gomez Excellence in Dissertation Award in 2011. In 2018, she was recognized as one of the honorees of the 2018 The Outstanding Young Men award, the most prestigious leadership award given to Filipinos under 40. Prior to joining AIM, Erika was a scientist at innovation think tank A*STAR, Singapore. At A*STAR, she was involved in multiple projects with various government agencies and industries, including multinational companies, either as a principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or research scientist.

As a former senior Canadian government official, he is well versed in policy planning, design, and implementation. He has worked on a series of policy challenges throughout his extensive career in the Canadian government as well as his time working in the MENA region. In government, Aziz became a leader in inter-departmental policy making, leading teams on issues such as citizenship legislation; maternal health in developing countries, Canada’s policies on international trade with the Middle East, and Canada’s policy with respect to children in armed conflict, just to name a few. Over the past 18 years, Aziz has also been a Canadian Middle East affairs policy planner with Global Affairs Canada and was a Director of Policy in the Office of the Privy Council. As a diplomat, Aziz was a negotiator to diplomatic agreements between the international community, the Palestinians and Israel, a leader of government delegations to international summits and worked as a senior advisor on strategic communications and Middle East policy for Canada's Prime Minister. For the last 10 years, he has lived and worked in Dubai, including four years as Canada’s Deputy Ambassador to the UAE. More recently, Aziz undertook international relations academic work in Dubai and is co-author of a chapter on policy planning in the emerging field of positivity and wellbeing. He is also the owner and director of POP!, a cultural and gastronomic events and consulting business in Dubai, which involves the curation and design of art and culinary events, marketing and PR, and event management.

Matthias Peitz is Policy Lead of the EU Global Tech Panel, an initiative of the High Representative and Vice-President of the European Union bringing together leaders from the worlds of technology, civil society and diplomacy to develop solutions on how to leverage digital technologies to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He is developing a pilot project in North Africa set to move forward initiatives to boost digital jobs and skills for human development. Matthias advises the EU on Innovation and Technology Policy, Digital Transformation and Ecosystem Building and is a member of the EU Taskforce on Digital Diplomacy. Previously, he worked for the European Union and Bertelsmann Foundation in various positions on political and economic affairs as well as strategic communication, media and technology projects.

Lénia Mestrinho is the Executive Director of the Data Science Knowledge Center at Nova SBE, where she is also Academic Adviser in Consulting Labs (M.Sc.) and Business Projects (CEMS-MIM). Lénia is also a Strategic Adviser for APAC Portugal, working with the inmate and former inmate population. Her experience includes projects and clients in the public, private and nonprofit sectors, in several countries, including Spain, UK, Albania, Croatia, Mexico, Chile, Angola, Mozambique and Bangladesh. Additionally, supported the Data Science for Social Good Foundation, leading the global coordination of 2019 Summer Fellowships, in partnership with the Imperial Business School, the University of Warwick and The Alan Turing Institute, in the UK. She previously worked as a Project Manager on the Data Science for Social Good Europe Summer Fellowship in 2018, hosted by Nova SBE and the University of Chicago. Also launched the B Corp movement in Portugal and Lusophone Africa at IES - Social Business School, evaluated social business investment projects at Yunus Social Business (Albania), advised the Minister of Economy managing the Adjustment Program between the Portuguese Government and Troika, and was a Strategy and Operations consultant at Deloitte Portugal. Lénia has a degree (B.Sc.) in Economics from Nova SBE and a Master (M.Sc.) in Management from Católica Lisbon SBE.

Marisa Tschopp is an AI researcher, Women in AI Ambassador Switzerland, and a mother of two. Interested in research on AI from a humanities perspective, Marisa works at scip AG, a cyber security and technology company in Zurich - www.scip.ch As an organizational psychologist, Marisa is currently working on the Titanium Trust Report 2019, investigating the role of trust in the AI context. Inspired by interdisciplinary approaches, Marisa focuses on AI-based systems from a humanities perspective, with a wide range of questions related to psychological phenomena, like cognition or consciousness or measuring the capabilities of digital assistants such as Alexa and Siri with the Artificial Intelligence Quotient framewrok. In addition, she is specifically interested in AI and ethics, for example, discussing the use of lethal autonomous weapons, as she envisions a future, where AI benefits future generations and humanity as a whole. In her free time, Marisa is a passionate volleyball player and you will most likely find her hiking in the Swiss alps on weekends.

Steven Braekeveldt (18-10-1960) holds different degrees in Law and a Master’s in Economics. He has had a long international career in the financial services sector, both in banking and insurance. He held various management positions within ING, among others as CEO of BBL Hong Kong and CEO and Merchant Banking at BBL/ING Singapore. In 2001 he became Executive Committee member of ING Commercial America, one of the largest insurance companies of Latin America. In 2006 he joined Fortis Insurance International and became responsible for Europe (9 countries). Steven Braekeveldt is currently CEO of Continental Europe Ageas and CEO of Ageas Portugal Group which includes the commercial brands: Ageas Seguros, Médis, Ocidental and Seguro Directo. In 2019, Steven was distinguished “Inspiring Leader” by OCI and “Communicator CEO of the year” by APCE.

Graduated in Applied Maths and master in Computer Science he had his first contact with advanced analytics pretty soon, in his master thesis focused in data science applied to Health Care. André has been working through the years in Business Intelligence and Advanced Analytics, delivering a diversity of analytics projects to several customers from distinct industries as Pharma, Distribution, Banking or Retail. Currently he is leading the AI & Data Science department at BI4ALL, helping his company and its customers transforming themselves and adopting the new reality of today, Artificial Intelligence.

I got a PhD from UC Berkeley in 1994, after a BSc and a MSc from IST, in 1986 and 1989, respectively. My major areas of interest are Algorithms and Complexity, Machine Learning, Bioinformatics and Digital Circuit Design. I have worked at CERN, Cadence Laboratories and INESC-ID. I am a member of the Portuguese Academy of Engineering and a senior member of IEEE.

Being a former President of Nova SBE Students' Union, I have a strong business sense and am capable of successfully leading teams, even under constant pressure, as proved by the 46-member team that constituted the SU. I am used to having a big amount of responsibility, due to the 100.000€ turnover institution I managed and to the role of Teaching Assistant I had at Nova SBE. Sandra Maximiano is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Lisbon School of Economics & Management (ISEG) at University of Lisbon. Before joining ISEG, she was a faculty member at Purdue University and a Research fellow at University of Chicago. Her research cross-cuts different fields: behavioral and experimental economics, labor and organizational economics, public policy, and information management. Sandra focuses on exploring questions related to social and moral preferences, gender differences in economic decisions, and the interplay of information in competitive and cooperative environments. She primarily uses laboratory and field experiments to learn about human economic behavior and collect data. Since 2015 Sandra is the author of a weekly column - &conomia à sexta - in the Portuguese newspaper Expresso.
