The Strategic Plan for Urban Waste (PERSU) 2030 sets ambitious goals for managing and treating urban waste, requiring significant improvements in logistics and infrastructure. However, recycling and waste separation indicators are lagging behind the necessary pace to meet these goals at both national and European levels, highlighting the need to optimize the network of recycling points.
The NILG.AI project, developed in collaboration with ALGAR under the open innovation program ReSOURCE, aims to address this problem by optimizing the distribution of recycling points using AI and geospatial data. This maximizes accessibility and coverage in residential areas and increases the amount of recycled waste. The project is currently being piloted in the Municipalities of Lagoa and São Brás de Alportel, where the first results have shown a +80% agreement between AI suggestions and human decisions. By the end of 2024, the goal is to evaluate and optimize the process so that, by 2025, it can be expanded to the entire Algarve region.
