Federated learning (FL) is a decentralized machine learning technique that allows multiple entities to jointly train a model while preserving dataset privacy. However, its distributed nature has raised various security concerns, which have been addressed by increasingly sophisticated defenses. These defenses utilize a range of data sources and metrics to, for example, filter out malicious model updates, ensuring that the impact of attacks is eliminated.
This talk explores the feasibility of designing a generic attack method capable of installing backdoors in FL while evading a diverse array of defenses. Specifically, we focus on an attacker strategy called MIGO, which aims to produce model updates that subtly blend with legitimate ones. The resulting effect is a gradual integration of a backdoor into the global model, often ensuring its persistence long after the attack concludes, while generating enough ambiguity to hinder the effectiveness of defenses.
We built a solution for automating fish identification and tracking in 3 dams equipped with locks that film fish swimming upstream.
Through real-world examples, we'll offer practical lessons for tackling challenging aquatic environments with non-standard aspect-ratio, varying water quality, algae obstructions, and non-standard fish orientations. We'll also cover the integration of our model into the existing fish monitoring infrastructure.
By the end, you'll gain a comprehensive understanding of our end-to-end approach, from data collection to model deployment, and the valuable lessons learned along the way.

Each tribe in the AI ecosystem speaks a different language, leading to misalignments in their objectives and priorities. Business teams outline initiatives with detailed scopes, which are then handed off to technical teams. Then, technical teams take their part and pile up with technical features deviating from the ultimate goal of any early-stage project: validation. Precious assets from the business are wasted, and, most importantly, the promise of an ever-improving business with AI is unfulfilled. This talk will show you the AI canvas, a lingua franca to align technical and business teams to fulfill their vision. By using the AI Canvas, organizations can eliminate communication barriers, ensuring that both teams concentrate on what truly matters to drive continuous business improvement through AI.
